– Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Edition

Date: 3-12-17

Racetrack: Streets of St. Petersburg

Pole Sitter: Will Power

  • Sébastien Bourdais: Sébastien won the Grand Prix. He started last after crashing in qualifying. He got a caution at the right time and moved to the front. He passed last year’s Champion, Simon Pagenaud, to win.
  • Scott Dixon: Scott was in second place when he got caught out by a caution. He had to pass people all day to get up into third place. It was his 90th podium of his open wheel career.
  • Takuma Sato: Takuma has had a lot of poor finishes the last few years at AJ Foyt Racing. He moved to Andretti Autosport this year and got a good finish in the Grand Prix.
  • Marco Andretti: For the first time in a while, Marco had one of his better runs on a road course. He contended most of the day which led to a top-ten.
  • Ed Jones: Ed got a top-ten in his Indycar debut. He was consistent in his first race.

Pole Sitter: Kevin Harvick

  • Jimmie Johnson: Jimmie won his seventh championship tying Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt for first place. He proved how good a driver he really is by winning the race.
  • Kyle Larson: Kyle almost won a race for the fifth time now only to come up empty. His one win does feel good but he feels like he could have five. Almost beating Jimmie Johnson considering the circumstances was a great showing for him.
  • Brian Scott: Brian got a top-fifteen finish. I put his decent run on here after learning this could be his final NASCAR race. He was reported to have a health problem that could end his career. He did well in what could be his last race.
  • Michael McDowell: Michael drove that No. 5 car up into the front part of the field again. His team is poorly-funded so it was another great effort.
  • Jamie McMurray: Jamie got a top-five in a champion deciding race. He beat other Chasers and drivers in a good run. Even though he wasn’t a Chaser he was driving like one.
  • AJ Allmendinger: AJ finished the year strong. He got a nice top-ten finish to lead into next year.

Pole Sitter: Alex Bowman

  • Joey Logano: Joey won the race and advanced to the Final Four. He will feel so good after what happened to him in the last Chase.
  • Kyle Busch: Kyle got enough points to advance to the Final Four. He was the only driver without a win this round to advance. He could repeat his championship.
  • Kyle Larson: Kyle is finishing the season strong for Ganassi and Target. Target is leaving Ganassi’s Indycar team and may be only sponsoring Kyle Larson next year.
  • Alex Bowman: Alex might have won from pole if he hadn’t been hit by Kyle Busch. That contact also eliminated Kyle’s teammate Matt Kenseth from the Chase. Alex was very close with his good run.
  • Ryan Blaney: Ryan may not be able to catch Chase Elliott for Rookie of the Year but he can still get a top-ten finish ahead of Chase.
  • Chase Elliott: Chase is still a top-ten car again. With his most recent top-ten this week he is all but certain to be Rookie of the Year.

Pole Sitter: Austin Dillon

  • Carl Edwards: Carl needed a win to advance in the Chase. He won today amidst a little controversy to advance. NASCAR had to explain on Monday why they called the race so early. Some people felt like the race could have continued if they tried to dry the track.
  • Joey Logano: Joey got second place in the race. He is still near the cut line even with two good finishes. He will have to battle to stay in next week with two spots open.
  • Martin Truex Jr.: Martin was in the top-five letting everybody know that he is Championship material despite being eliminated.
  • Chase Elliott: Chase was also in the top-five letting everybody know that this is just his rookie season. For a warning to future competition: he has done much better than Jeff Gordon did in his rookie season.
  • Kasey Kahne: Kasey got a top-ten to try and make a solid case to stay at Hendrick. All of the first part of the year Kasey didn’t look good and missed the Chase with no win. He has no lifetime contract with Hendrick. All of these good finishes lately are in a sense him driving for his job. As far as the Hendrick drivers go he has been quite a disappointment that has gotten worse.
  • Ryan Newman: Ryan has been running well in the Chase races too to potentially retain a Childress job. He got tenth place.

  • Jimmie Johnson: Jimmie won the race and advanced. He will be in the Championship race. [Going for seven.]
  • Brad Keselowski: Brad was in second place and put in one of the best drives by an eliminated driver so far in the Chase.
  • Jeff Gordon: Jeff may have been in his last race in cup and quietly was sixth. He proved he is Mr. Martinsville again.
  • Denny Hamlin: Denny was in the top-ten in second place in the Chase so far. He just needs consistent runs now.
  • Matt Kenseth: Matt makes up two Gibbs cars currently advancing into the final four.
  • Kyle Busch: Kyle makes up the other Gibbs driver. This could be a second consecutive Championship.

  • Joey Logano: Joey led 45 laps and was unpassable at the end of the race. He moved on in the Chase when he needed to. He was on the border line.
  • Brian Scott: Brian got his best run of the year in second place. He helped out his own cause for staying in that team next year.
  • Denny Hamlin: Denny won a tie break with Austin Dillon to move on in the Chase. He finished in third place for a lucky advance.
  • Kurt Busch: Kurt advanced to the third round of the Chase with his consistency. He ran a safe race.
  • Kyle Larson: Kyle got one of the best finishes for an eliminated Chase driver yet again. He was in the top-ten proving he just had a bad race when he got eliminated.
  • Kevin Harvick: Kevin had a chance as a Chase winner to go for the win. He could finish anywhere and advance. He was much further back in the race than I thought he would be. He still got a solid finish

Pole Sitter: Matt Kenseth

  • Kevin Harvick: Kevin answered everybody about his record of advancing in the Chase. By winning, he did so again. He beat Carl Edwards to race in the round of eight.
  • Carl Edwards: Carl thought he had the race won until a late caution. He got beat by Kevin Harvick. Carl was second. He did close in on advancing in the Chase.
  • Joey Logano: Joey helped his cause for advancing in the Chase with a good third place finish. He won Talladega last year so he might be able to win his way in.
  • AJ Allmendinger: AJ was in the top-ten despite not being in the Chase. He has really improved that single car team since joining it.
  • Alex Bowman: Alex was the top finishing non-Chase driver for another week during this year’s Chase. He has done about as good as Jeff Gordon filling in in that car.
  • Kasey Kahne: Kasey got another finish that was so good he might have advanced if he was in the Chase in this round. He has improved but a little too late for the Championship.

  • Jimmie Johnson: Jimmie won the race. He led the most laps. He got a rare Hendrick win this season. It came at the perfect time for him to advance to the round of eight. It was the first time since the Chase rounds were formed that he advanced past the round of 12.
  • Matt Kenseth: Matt was second in the race and Jimmie Johnson’s last threat. He got close to locking himself into the next round. He will be quick going forward.
  • Ryan Newman: Ryan had one of his best runs this year. Being in the top-five in good considering he is not in the Chase and winless.
  • Brad Keselowski: Brad has been the most consistent car all year with the old point’s standings. He is a threat for the Championship with every race.
  • Danica Patrick: Danica had a good run this week in 11th place. She is trying to build momentum towards next season.
  • Michael McDowell: Michael got a top-fifteen finish in his weak- funded team. He is still feeling good after his Xfinity win this season.

Pole Sitter: Brad Keselowski

  • Martin Truex Jr.: Martin won the race. He beat out Kyle Busch for the win. His single car team advanced in the Chase. They now have four wins this year.
  • Kyle Busch: Kyle just missed out on the win again by one spot. He is a Chase favorite. He could go far again in this Chase.
  • Chase Elliott: Chase advanced in the Chase by finishing third. With Chris Buescher being eliminated he should be the highest finishing rookie of the year on points. He is still winless but he is expected to win one soon.
  • Brad Keselowski: Brad started on pole and got a top-five finish. He advanced in the Chase. He is the leading Penske driver in the Chase.
  • Jeff Gordon: Jeff got what could be his last top-ten of his career with only a start or two left this year. He was the top finishing non-Chase driver.
  • Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Ricky got a good run this week as a non-Chase driver. It was one of his better finishes as well.

Pole Sitter: Carl Edwards

  • Kevin Harvick: Kevin got a good last restart and won the race. He moves on in the Chase while he gets all the glory. He is ready for another title.
  • Matt Kenseth: Matt battled Martin Truex Jr. all day and then lost out on the last restart to lose the race. He had gotten the better of Truex, and thought he was going to win until Kevin Harvick got him. He still led a bunch of laps and is in a good position to progress on points alone.
  • Martin Truex Jr.: Martin led a bunch of laps like Matt Kenseth but in the end he fell back from the battle for the win. He got a good points finish but he was hoping for a win. He will likely advance like Kenseth on points.
  • Kasey Kahne: Kasey got the best finish of a non-Chase driver. He was in ninth place. He has raced well enough through the first two Chase rounds where if he was in the Chase he would likely advance.
  • Carl Edwards: Carl had another Pole winning car but in the end he couldn’t finish the deal with a win. He will question what he needs more than this to win. He will also likely advance on points to Round 2 of the Chase.
  • Ryan Blaney: Ryan got another good finish just outside the top-ten. He has ran well for the Wood Brothers. He is hoping that he can win before the end of the year to answer his rookie rivals.
