JAW’s ‘HEARTRACERS / HEARTBREAKERS’
– 2016 Cheez-It 355 at the Glen edition

Date: 8-7-16

Racetrack: Watkins Glen International

Pole Sitter: Carl Edwards

HEARTRACERS:

  • Denny Hamlin: Denny won the race for Gibbs’ tenth win of the season. The rest of NASCAR teams’ other wins are 12. They have almost as many wins as one team as the rest of NASCAR combined. He got the lead after teammate Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski went wide at turn one.
  • Joey Logano: Joey was second in the race. He had damage on the car from contact. He might have been able to challenge Denny Hamlin for the win without the damage. Due to other drivers’ problems he got a very good second-place considering his damage to the car. He won the Xfinity race the day before and got second in the Cup race.
  • Brad Keselowski: Brad had the race won until he went too deep into turn one on a restart. He led the most laps and got a top-five finish. He is also tied for the most wins this season heading into the Chase.
  • AJ Allmendinger: AJ had his best run of the year in fourth place. He needed the win for the Chase so it was bittersweet.
  • Jamie McMurray: Jamie is in the Chase at the moment on points. He got a good top-ten finish to extend his lead over the cutoff.
  • Casey Mears: Casey got one of his best finishes of the year after running strong. He stayed out of trouble and had some decent pace. His team is much faster this year than before.

HEARTBREAKERS:

  • Jimmie Johnson: Jimmie had trouble all day and is lucky he is safely in the Chase. He had lots of pit road problems to be a lap down early. He was in the first multicar crash of the day. He was out in 40th place.
  • Alex Kennedy: Alex was very slow this race due to being in a poorly-funded team. He also lost an engine on lap 76 of the race.
  • Kevin Harvick: Kevin was in a multi-car crash on lap 85 of the race. He had trouble during the day that put him at the back of the field. The big wrecks that occurred in the race happened at the back of the field where he was running.
  • Chris Buescher: Chris had a chance to pull ahead of David Regan in the points to get in the Chase. He was in the same wreck as David so he didn’t pass him in the points. He might not be able to make the top-thirty based on his team’s pace. He could be the first driver in the new format to win a race but miss the Chase by being outside the top-thirty. If that happens the top-thirty rule by NASCAR may change where any driver that wins a race will automatically be in. If that happens, a driver like Bobby Labonte, only making four starts a year, could be in the Chase. He could do that with a restrictor plate win.
  • Kyle Larson: Kyle got turned out of the final corner and didn’t make the line. That means that not only did he lose a top-five finish but he was hurt in the Chase. He is only eight points above the current cut line. If Chris Buescher makes the top-thirty he could be out of the Chase by being cut from the top-sixteen.
  • David Ragan: David was in two accidents in this race. After he crashed for the second time I decided to add him to this list. He normally runs further back in the field due to his team’s pace.

HEARTRACERS:

  • Tony keeps getting closer to a Chase berth each week with these top-five finishes. He is rapidly pulling away from thirtieth place.
