For those of you NASCAR fans that like stats and love to hate commercials, here is the breakdown from the race on Sunday afternoon. This breakdown is thoroughly unprofessional, and, hopefully, easy-to-understand.
I started recording the times as the Invocation for the race was given at 2:00 PM, and stopped at the waving of the checkered flag at 5:48 PM (all times are EST). I did not keep records for the pre- and post-race coverage.
Please note that in addition to all of the following, there is always a company logo visible in the upper right hand corner by the race ticker scrolling across the screen.
There are plans in the future for more stats from the race. Once we reach September, when we began doing these breakdowns last year, we will be able to make side-by-side comparisons.
Race and Commercial Breakdown of the Samsung 500 04-15-07
Total number of commercials: 122
Total number of companies or entities advertised: 67
Total number of brief promos of products/services during the race broadcast: 35
Total number of companies or entities advertised in brief promos or crawlers: 33 (companies: NASCAR Foundation/NASCAR Day, Chevy, NAPA, McDonald’s, Nextel, DLP, Budweiser, NASCAR on Fox, DirecTV, AppleBee’s, Baseball on Fox, Phoenix Raceway, Gillette deodorant, GoodYear, FedEx, Dominos, Allstate, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Lowes, Wendy’s, Auto Zone, AT&T/Cingular, Toyota, tribute to Jackie Robinson, Burger King, Craftsman Tools, State Farm, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, UPS sponsors Fantasy Racing at Fox Sports, Team Dominos, Home Depot, Ford, Subway, Nextel)
Total amount of time these brief promos take during broadcast: app. 3 min. 20 sec.
How much time was spent in the Hollywood Hotel this week: Some fans have been complaining about how much time Fox spends with Chris Myers and Jeff Hammond in the Hollywood Hotel while the racing is on. Generally these breaks only occur during cautions, or if during green-flag racing, they keep the camera on the racing and it is just voice-overs by Myers and Hammond. Many times the broadcast is begun with Myers and Hammond, briefly seen in the Hotel interspersed with shots of pit road, the audience, and the cars on the track. For this particular racing Sunday, the broadcast began with the Myers/Hammond voice-overs for the first eight minutes. During the race, though, they broke to Myers and Hammond inside the Hotel during green flag racing first for app. 30 seconds; and then later they were on-camera with Kevin Alejandro, one of the stars of the TV show, ‘Drive’, that was premiering Sunday evening, for app. 40 seconds.
Also, there are the following race statistics during the broadcast, sponsored by companies:

Apr 16, 01:06 PMHey, i think nascar should run shorter races. This will help the commercial time lower. Once the race got down to under 100 laps to go the excitement picked up. Also i have a new breakdown that would work. How many wrecks and cautions has Steven Wallace caused in the Busch Series this year. Both numbers have to be close to 20.
THANKS

Apr 16, 04:44 PMHow many times did DW mention Toyota compared to the other manufacturers?

Apr 16, 07:15 PMHow many times did DW gush on and on about the Hendrick organization? You’d think they were the only team out there on Sundays according to that gas bag.

Apr 16, 07:56 PMExcellent job of the breakdown, it just shows how much FOX coverage really blows. Not only are you lucky to see 10 minutes of racing without a commercial, your lucky if the broadcast doesnt drop and you watch a black screen(which I did for the last 30 minutes of bristol). I could deal without hearing Mike Myers input, you would think after covering racing for this long he would at least have a little bit of knowledge in that jar with eyes. Larry “Mac” give me a break already 2 things he says every race several times “ its lap *** and he just ran the fastest lap of the race” and “ theres X amount of people here and nobody is in their seats they are all standing” hmmm briliant deduction there milo! I highly doubt we can tell that seeing how we watch the commercials and other meaningless garbage that FOX has put together less than we watch the actual race!! One more little comment, if FOX put 1/2 as much time into race coverage as they do the STUPID litle skits, they would be golden. What happened to screen in screen shots of the race during a commercial THAT was a killer idea!
What’s good about NASCAR? Chances are good that many NASCAR fans know a child with Autism, and chances are becoming greater that many of them will raise one
