For those of you NASCAR fans that like stats and love to hate commercials, here is the breakdown from the race on Sunday afternoon. This breakdown is thoroughly unprofessional, and, hopefully, easy-to-understand.
I started recording the times as the Invocation for the race was given at 2:09 PM, and stopped at the waving of the checkered flag at 5:43 PM (all times are EST). I did not keep records for the pre- and post-race coverage.
Please note that in addition to all of the following, there is always a company logo visible in the upper right hand corner by the race ticker scrolling across the screen.

Mar 19, 03:42 PMToo bad you couldn’t figure out how much time was spent talking between Johnson/Gordon/Montoya and all the other drivers. I’m guessing 60% to 40%.

Mar 21, 10:50 PMCheryl,
When you are doing your stats could you also include the number of passes shown (for lead and for position) as part of your stats.
According to NASCARs stats Jeff Burton, Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth have over 1000 total “Quality Passes” (whatever that is) this season alone. It appears from NASCARs own statistics these guys are racing (since they lead the league in this stat)-yet they are never shown in the broadcasts unless they get in the lead.
I find this fascinating. I don’t think Carl Edwards has gotten to the lead yet and Jeff Burton carries the wrong logo, so he won’t be shown either.
Wonder how many quality passes FOX has actually shown? Passes Shown divided by Passes Made for a Broadcast Passing Percentage might be an interesting stat.
Maybe its not the quality of the racing (not many passes being made), but the quality of the broadcast (action not being shown). I figure the broadcast can’t improve a bad race, but a bad broadcast can destroy a good race. I’m not sure we can tell what we have but you can sure help.
Using your information with NASCAR’s information might give the fans a way to judge and maybe improve the way the sport is covered.
Thanks again and keep up the good work.

An to think that the ton of commercials that are shown during the prerace and postrace shows are not included in the above total! Boy, it called commercial pollution!
