Commercial breakdown for the UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400 03-11-07
Posted by Cheryl Walker under Racing ArticleFor those of you NASCAR fans that like stats and love to hate commercials, here is the breakdown from the race on Sunday afternoon. This breakdown is thoroughly unprofessional, and, hopefully, easy-to-understand.
I started recording the times as the Invocation for the race was given at 4:30 PM, and stopped at the waving of the checkered flag at 7:56 PM (all times are EST). I did not keep records for the pre- and post-race coverage.
Please note that in addition to all of the following, there is always a company logo visible in the upper right hand corner by the race ticker scrolling across the screen.

Mar 12, 05:58 AMgreat job it would be interesting to see how much actual live race coverage there is. like when they come back from a commercial and the 2 jackasses in the hollywood hotel are recapping a race that is still in progress. or talking about restaint systems.
-
Bob Says:
Mar 12, 08:50 AMAn interesting additional breakdown might be “actual race” broadcast. Meaning removing the time that FOX self promotes shows, DW’s boogity, FOX’s MTV video promo for the race that we are already watching, and those human interest pieces. In other words, actual race coverage.
Thanks

Mar 12, 09:40 AMare you including the hollywood hotel as race broadcast? there were a few of those that took away from the actual racing broadcast.

Mar 12, 11:36 AMGreat job..Puts it all in numbers how NASCAR has “Sold Out” to big money. Try tracking the useless pre-race BS., thats mind numbing as well!!

Mike from Michigan Says:
Mar 13, 04:34 AMI love stats! and I know that generating them is time consuming. So thanks for the time you spent on these.

Mar 13, 05:24 AMGeez…
Same story as last year…people whining about this, whining about that…whining, whining, whining…
What the number’s TRULY say…is the race broadcast is on par with just about every other television show that is shown. The commercial time in the race is probably nearly proportional to the commercial time in a regular 30/60 minute show, whether it be sitcom or what have you.
Not to mention, there HAS to be these commercials…if not, you are NOT going to be watching races on TV anymore.
As far as Picture in Picture/Side by Side stuff? Not every sponsor is willing to do that…and you have to, as much as some of you dislike it…APPEASE these sponsors. There money, helps keep NASCAR running and, ultimately, helps keep YOUR favorite driver out there doing what they love to do…RACE.
Jesus….cost of living goes up each year…hence, commercial time’s need to go up at times. Just live w/ it.

Mar 14, 09:04 AMGreat job, I know this stuff can be time consuming. I would like to see how many acutual laps are shown, a category for yellow and green that are broadcasted. That would give a true interpretation of how much racing you would see. Like the
who mention the idea that Nascar is on par with any other 30/60 min show. I don’t think you turn in to Nascar to watch yellow flag laps or fluff, neither would that be true of any 30/60 show. You turn to watch racing! See if you can try it out one week and then lets get a % of how much actual racing is shown/missed. Thanks!!

Great job… I always look at these numbers every week – for the NASCAR races (refered by Jayski…) but it would be interesting if you would compare from races to races or even from network to network. Some sort of a cumulative chart.
Thanks
