For those of you NASCAR fans that like stats and love to hate commercials, here is the breakdown from the race on Sunday afternoon.
Here is my breakdown, thoroughly unprofessional, and, hopefully, easy-to-understand.
I started recording the times as the Invocation for the race was given at 3:10 PM, and stopped at the waving of the checkered flag at 7:05 PM (all times are EST). I did not keep records for the pre- and post-race coverage.
Please note that in addition to all of the following, there is always a company logo visible in the upper right hand corner by the race ticker scrolling across the screen.

-
Dave Jackson Says:
Feb 19, 10:31 AMCheryl-Great Info!
I’d just suggest 1 more stat—59mins of commercials = 25.11% of 235mins of the race.
Outrageous from the pre-‘01 contracts with NBC & FOX of 14%.

Bunkey Says:
Feb 19, 11:08 AMMaybe they should just run the commercials,or like espn, run captions at the lower part of the screen, that distract you?
-
Janet Says:
Feb 19, 01:29 PMSure didn’t know there were that many but all those people involved have to get paid somehow, I guess.
-
Rick Says:
Feb 19, 02:44 PMWe love reading this every week! Thanks for your hard work and time every week-
-
Jeff Says:
Feb 20, 08:39 AMYou should only be keeping track of commercials that occur after the green flag. On Sunday the green flag did not fall until 3:30 and quite naturally there will be several commercials shown during the period leading up to the race. I feel that the numbers reported here and on Jayski are flawed because of the way things are being tracked here.
-
Nicholaus Says:
Feb 20, 03:23 PMUh, correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t an entire NASCAR race one big commercial where we watch corporate logos going around a track over and over for hours? What’s wrong with watching actual :30 commercials as well? Especially when they’re good. Think about it.
-
Lorne Says:
Feb 20, 05:15 PMI think that NASCAR should use the Side By Side feature like the IRL does. The race seems more exciting

mcmtlm Says:
Feb 20, 08:11 PMGoing to commercial with 16 to go is completely UNACCEPTABLE
-
lone star Says:
Feb 21, 08:42 AMFox is WAY better than NBC but there are still too many commercials. And the NA$CAR Hot Pass on Direct TV is a joke. Don’t waste your money unless you want to pay extra to see more commercials.
I read the article by Artie Kemper posted on this site and he makes it very clear that the networks have overpaid for the “right” to broadcast the races. Whose fault is that? Brian France! Maybe NA$CAR should step up and buy back some of that commercial time.

caw Says:
Feb 21, 10:42 AMThanks everyone. I’m tickled to have found something I can record for the fans that they enjoy reading as much as they have the commercial statistics.
And if anyone missed it, you can read Artie Kempner’s from Fox article about commercials that lone star referenced at this link: http://www.cawsnjaws.com/article/291/nascar-on-fox-lead-director-artie-kempner-talks-about-the-delicate-balance-of-nascar-and-commercials
Thanks, all, for your comments! :)

Tony Says:
Feb 21, 12:34 PMEntirely, too many commercials! I could deal with the SNICKERS spot though…! “Go Ricky…!!!”

Lorne Says:
Feb 21, 12:40 PMI agree with Bunkey

Feb 21, 09:09 PMWonderful stats! Thank you. To many commercials. Although I do I would be interested how this compares with other sporting events or even regular network tv.

I know that they have to pay for the air time but it has come to the point that I no longer watch the entire race. I watch the first 10 or so laps and then come back and watch the last 15 to 20 laps because of all the commercials, if they would put the race up in the corner like a Picture in picture that would work for me, but when something happens on the track during a commercial you do not even get a rundown of it when they come back. They can still have commercials and show the race! I am Sick Of the Commercial. I now have a DVR and record the race and skip all of the Commercials when I wacth it.
