For those of you NASCAR fans that like stats and love to hate commercials, here is the breakdown from the race on Sunday afternoon.
Here is my breakdown, thoroughly unprofessional, and, hopefully, easy-to-understand.
I started recording the times as the Invocation for the race was given at 3:20 PM, and stopped at the waving of the checkered flag at 7:01 PM (all times are EST). I did not keep records for the pre- and post-race coverage.
Please note that in addition to all of the following, there is always a company logo visible in the upper right hand corner by the race ticker scrolling across the screen.

Nov 13, 04:24 AMTV and it’s commercials are killing NASCAR racing. I record then edit the Busch and Cup races. At Phoenix you saw 68% of the Busch race and 64% of the Cup race commercial free – Green Flag to Checker Flag. I watched the Giants football game later on and saw 100% of the 60 minute game.

Nov 13, 06:29 AMBOY DO I AGREE NBC AN WEBBER DO A LOUSY JOB. AFTER THE RACE THEY LEAVE THE IMPRESSION THAT THEY CAN’T WAIT TO SIGN OFF, AN GUESS WHAT THEY DO JUST THAT.
OLE D.W. & FOX JUST CAN’T BE BEAT. WHY DON’T NASCAR LISTEN TO THE FAN’S WHEN IT COMES TO BROADCASTING?
DON’T FORGET FANS ARE WHY NASCAR IS AROUND TODAY.
NBC NEEDS TO STAY WITH LITTLE LEAGUE BAT GAMMON AN SOCCER. THAT IS MORE THEIR SPEED. OH YES, BENNY YOU NEED TO SIGN UP WITH FOX.
WEBER YOU HAVE A SCENSE OF HUMOR LIKE A HORSE BISCUIT IN A PUNCH BOWL.

Nov 13, 08:23 AMThis is what I’ve noticed about NBC: first when there is a long green flag run they take a commercial every 5 laps. However during the Phoenix race i noticed that during the 10 minute red flag they didnt take a commercial. This iratates me because they take commercials at the worst time. Also I’d like to add that Bill Weber can’t make a joke to save his life.

former na$car fan Says:
Nov 13, 08:58 AMI guess there is something to be said for consistency, at least we know what to expect; a crappy broadcast filled with mind numbing commercialism. I don’t get the 28 minutes of commercial free at the end; wasn’t there a red flag?
It’s the white flag lap for NBC, and not soon enough if you ask me. I just hope the producers at Fox and ESPN are reading some of this feedback and take it to heart. I suggest they also go back and review some broadcasts from before the NBC/FOX era.
I say bring back the old school racing broadcast; remember back in the day when they would use the longer shot of the action versus constant close ups; you didn’t need through the field because you could see where your driver was running. Back then the pit reporters knew their business and a crew in the booth was both entertaining and technically informative.
Ahh, back in the day, broadcasts with 20 minute chunks of racing separated by 5 minute chunks of commercials (enough time to get some relief and another cold one). Listening to names like Jenkins, Jarrett, Punch, Berggren, Arute, Kernan, Joy, Patterson, Gold, Bonnett, Bestwick, Baker and of course who could forget Squire. Oh yes, back in the day… Sometimes you don’t know what you have until you loose it.
Let the “new” NA$CAR fan have their cut away car, home depot garage, through the field, boogity woogity and crank it up. NA$CAR veterans are learning to TiVo the broadcast, skip the commercials and go out to support their local short track; where the racing is real and flag to flag actually means something.

Nov 13, 09:10 AMWally needs to shut up about the stupid apple pie stuff…thats getting old. nbc does a good prerace but they need to reschedule the race to start earlier b/c going to CNBC is totally unexceptable. If they want football on then start earlier. It would make sense to leave the postrace stuff on NBC so they would draw in the football fans to watch nascar and then it would draw nascar fans to watch football. am i wrong?

Dan Says:
Nov 13, 02:07 PMAs a newbie to NASCAR I can not believe how many commercials they show, I really like the racing but just as I though even before I started watching, It’s all about how many sponsors you can get in ” My Chevy, Interstate Batteries, Nextel Phone Car was a little to tight today” Thank Goodness football is only a click away….
-
Matt C Says:
Nov 13, 03:25 PMThis whole Apple pie stuff, that Wally beats too death is just normal crap that NBC thrives on. They beat too death everything. When ever Dale JR wins a race, it is about his dad ” your dad did this on this date, how does it make you feel?” Please just give it up, let it go, please. Can we just let the boys over at fox, who know what there doing, do the job for good. Also we up here in the great white north(Canada) don’t have TNT so when a race is on there we get a feed, and have too watch it on TSN,our ESPN. We have to put up with late breaks, they come back after the restart, play the same four spots over and over, or we miss the race all together. Anyways great site!
Thanks
Matt

Nov 13, 03:33 PMI don’t believe that there will be any difference in the amount of commercials that we see once the new guys take over after NBC. The format may change but I’m sure we’ll still have tons of commercials- there is too much BIG money at stake for the powers that be. Forget the old days and ways of broadcasting, they are gone. Welcome to corporate world where racing is not the main topic of Na$car!
-
Gregg Says:
Nov 13, 08:12 PMI wonder if anyone counted how many times the NBC network said “JIMMIE JOHNSON” throughout the race
-
Don Enebo Says:
Nov 14, 04:52 PMBill Weber is soooo tiring. “Let’s see how this plays out” is said 100 times. (Count those along with commercials). I just hope ESPN doesn’t do as much fake hype, crowd pimping and talking as they do on Monday night football. And keep our national anthem real music, not sticks and stones or whatever those rock bands use.
-
Mike Says:
Nov 15, 12:25 PMI can’t stand to watch Nascar races anymore. We are short track racers and used to love watching Cup races but anymore I can’t stand the increased time devoted to commercials. I have to settle for reading about Nascar races the next day to keep my irritation under control.
-
Paul Cline Says:
Nov 18, 04:17 PMAnd next year when we go to ESPN, we have to put up with Brent Muffbooger!
Keep him on the football deal and let us have someone that knows our sport!
How many fans got 52 minutes of uninterrupted racing on Sunday? HeartRacers~HeartBreakers: Checker 500 edition

Nov 13, 03:08 AM
NBC and Weber are the worst! They come back for 1 minute then go back to commercial. Bring back FOX. And through the field is terrible. It’s filled woth stupid stuff like. “Tony Stewart says he always runs good when he has bacon and eggs for breakfast” Guess what he had for breakfast today? Bacon and eggs. Who cares!!!!
