For those of you NASCAR fans that like stats and love to hate commercials, here is the breakdown from the race on Saturday night.
Here is my breakdown, thoroughly unprofessional, and, hopefully, easy-to-understand.
I started recording the times as the Invocation for the race was given at 7:04 PM, and stopped at the waving of the checkered flag at 11:09 PM (all times are EST). I did not keep records for the pre- and post-race coverage.
Please note that in addition to all of the following, there is always a company logo visible in the upper right hand corner by the race ticker scrolling across the screen.
Bank of America 500 Race and Commercial Breakdown of 10-14-06
Items of interest this week: In addition to other promos during race time, there were three times that NBC added a crawler on the screen, just below the race ticker (promos for ‘Heroes’, ’30 Rock’, and NBCSports.com).
Also, NBC missed coming back to a restart once, after several races of getting back in time. On the other hand, twice NBC broke into a commercial to take viewers back to the race (once to see one of Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s advantageous pit stops, and once when Jeff Gordon’s engine blew up).
Total number of commercials: 142
Total number of companies or entities advertised: 78
Total number of brief promos of products/services during the race broadcast: 22

Total amount of time these brief promos take during broadcast: app. 2 min. 45 sec.

P. Stop Says:
Oct 15, 08:44 AMWhat’s up with showing ALL the freaking pit stops? This is NASCAR racing, not NASCAR pitting. Let’s go to a commercial so we can come back for PIT STOPS!! Give me a break…..oh, you just did!
-
NascarRules Says:
Oct 16, 11:14 AMWhat’s with going to commercial with 20 laps left at 11 o’clock at night? We missed 5 laps. You’d think they could run the last 20 laps without disruption!

Paul Cline Says:
Oct 16, 03:39 PMToo many commercials, but then again they do offer a potty break! Wish there was some way of just listening to the cars/watching the race and blocking out the sound of the announcers…they get on ones nerves after a very short time. How about replacing the announcers with sanner activity….PLEASE!
-
Bill Preston Says:
Oct 17, 05:25 PMI wonder if NBC thinks about why their ratings for the races are declining. Could it be because of the never ending feed of commercials? I think people are just getting sick of all of the commercials. I’ll bet when NASCAR changes to a different network that the ratings go back up, that is if we don’t get the same flood of commercials from “FOX”.

Bob Says:
Oct 17, 05:36 PMSo great that TNT has only 6 races next year. The booth announcers put me to sleep!
Alan Bestwick needs to be in the booth!

Oct 19, 08:42 AMThis info is fascinating. How far back have these kind of stats been gathered? It would be interesting to see the “minutes of broadcast/minutes of advertising” ratio compared to previous races.
-
Brandon Says:
Oct 20, 03:35 PMI see that the ratings are down. I grew up on Nascar. Now, I can’t watch anymore. I literally quit watching with two races left before the chase. I’ll watch again next year when Fox takes over. I literally found myself getting mad at the TV with nbc’s coverage. I felt like I was constantly watching commercials. I appreciate this info.

Oct 25, 05:29 PMIf they didn’t have to pay so much to carry nascar then they wouldn’t need to run so many ads, I’m guessing they arn’t making that much or they wouldn’t have let it go to ESPN

Maybe you should include all the “thru the fields as well” but if you did it might be the better part of the telecast.
