Commercial breakdown for the Banquet 400 presented by ConAgra Foods
Posted by Cheryl Walker under Racing ArticleFor those of you NASCAR fans that like stats and love to hate commercials, here is the breakdown from the race on Sunday afternoon.
Here is my breakdown, thoroughly unprofessional, and, hopefully, easy-to-understand.
I started recording the times as the Invocation for the race was given at 2:04 PM, and stopped at the waving of the checkered flag at 5:40 PM (all times are EST). I did not keep records for the pre- and post-race coverage.
Please note that in addition to all of the following, there is always a company logo visible in the upper right hand corner by the race ticker scrolling across the screen.

Oct 2, 10:05 AMThis weeks broadcast was a bit tricky. It seemed like the same ole thing but they would throw in an extended race segment from time to time. I think it was more Bill Webber than anything that was confusing me. It always sounds like he is going to commercial whenever he hands off to another broadcaster, it’s just weird. And what’s up with the through the field? They should be calling it through the top 10 not through the field! Attention NBC; going to break, coming back and “going through the field (i.e. top 10 err 10 minutes through the field)” and then going to another break doesn’t constitute a quality broadcast. In all fairness, it was good that they were able to stay for the final 20 laps without a break. Too bad they were in break when Gordon lost his camshaft, they came back as he entered his pit but I don’t think they missed a restart this week. Keep working on it NBC, you might get it right by the time Homestead rolls around.

Oct 2, 11:12 AMThis is fantastic information. Keep this up and you’re guaranteed to make a positive difference for viewers.
Is there any chance you could figure out what the standings would be if the last 10 races weren’t scored differently? Ex. Where would a driver like Tony Stewart be in the standings if NASCASR hadn’t altered the points standings? Further to that what would the standings look like if no driver would have received a lucky dog award through the racing year?Keep up the pressure.

Oct 2, 01:44 PMhello cheryl –
is it possible also list the number of commercial breaks (i know you can go and count them in your minute by minute breakdown – but you have everything so nicely done)also – how do you handle “rounding off” the times to even minutes – is it just that 2:29 becomes 2:00 – it just seems like that it would never come out in the end so that the combined indivvidual minutes would be the actual ending time of the race.
keep up the good work,
gil

Oct 6, 02:21 PMGross Incorrecness:
I watch the race semi-live with a DVR. I usually start about one to one half hours after the race has started and by the time the race is over I have caught up or nearly so.
I keep a record of the race which is recorded to a ‘commerical advance’ VCR and saved digitally as a nearly commerical free file. Commericial advance is old technology but marks and removes 75 to 95% of a commericals.

Oct 7, 05:50 PMTodd, Jayski.com does have a 2006 “Classic” points listing. Tony Stewart would have been 7th as of now.

Hi. Hope you liked the race finish yesterday. I thought it was great…win and 2nd finishers won w/o benefit of any fuel…LOL. You gotta love it.
Can you send me air time and commercial break downs for other races this season? Can you email them to me, please?
