For those of you NASCAR fans that like stats and love to hate commercials, here is the breakdown from the race on Sunday afternoon.
Here is my breakdown, thoroughly unprofessional, and, hopefully, easy-to-understand. If there are any errors please remember that I have a telephone, a husband, a son, and a subserviant relationship with Mother Nature (when she calls, I listen). I am also not being paid to do this, and no one has offered to compensate me (surprisingly enough).
I do it because I have discovered that the fans out there want the information, and I am glad to provide it for them.
I started recording the times as the Invocation for the race was given at 12:55 PM, and stopped at the waving of the checkered flag at 4:46 PM (all times are EST). I did not keep records for the pre- and post-race coverage.
Please note that in addition to all of the following, there is always a company logo visible in the upper right hand corner by the race ticker scrolling across the screen.
Of interest this week: One thing that seems to really perturb NASCAR fans is missing a restart while being away at commercial. During Sunday’s broadcast, two times the network got back to the race for a restart with no seconds to spare, but they definitely made it. As a matter of fact, the network interrupted a commercial to come back for one of the restarts, cutting Helen Hunt and Tom Hanks off during an embrace in the movie ‘Castaway’ to do so.
Are the voices of the NASCAR fans being heard? It remains to be seen.

Sep 25, 05:58 AMI appreciate what you are doing for the race fans. But I have a question about how the number of minutes in commercials per 30 minute period is worked out. I see on Jayski he noted that that number was 9.6 minutes per 30 minute period or something like that. I am not sure if this is his figure or yours, but this seems low. I have it at 14.14 minutes of commercials per 30 minute period. Can you tell me if that is his stat or yours? If it is yours, how was this determined? I basically took the total minutes (157) and divided it by 30 to get the number of segments (5.233), and then divided the total minutes of commecials (74) by the number of segments (5.233) to get the number of minutes in commercial per 30 minute segement. Maybe I am doing this wrong, but each week I see that stat it looks low based on my calculations and I just want the whole truth to come out…if you know what I mean. Thanks again.

My ciphering says the average here is 2.5 minutes of commercials for every 5 minutes of racing that is broadcast and there is something very seriously wrong with that.
Anyway, I recall a couple years back there was a site that would provide similar information but it would go a bit further with a critique of the broadcast. If memory serves the site owner was offered a job with NA$CAR or Nextel or something similar and the site was shutdown.

74 min of 231 min was commercials. This is ~32% of the total broadcast time was commercials. 32% of 30 minutes is ~9.6 minutes.
That’s how Jayski gets his number and it is correct.

Sep 25, 07:23 AMRay-Take the commercial minutes and divide by the total minutes. 74/231=.32 (% of total minutes at commercial) Multiply that by 30 minutes to get 9.61 minutes commercials/30 minutes broadcast.

If it weren’t for being able to switch back and forth between the tv and radio, it’d be about impossible to follow what the heck is going on.. Thanks for your research and data!! Sep 25, 08:39 AMOne Word TIVO. I start the thing recording the race and a few hours beyond. Then I just start watching later (now I know to watch about 74 min later…thanks). That way I can fast forward the commercials…But still watch the finish LIVE. I’m not sure which I love more my Tivo or NASCAR.

Considering approx. 25% of the race is under caution at reduced speed we really only see about 60% of the actual racing (not pit racing either). Thats why NASCAR is failing. I saw all 60 minutes of my football game yesterday and all 60 minutes of my college favorite on Saturday. Even baseball doesn’t miss any action (yawn).

Sep 25, 09:03 AMI have been watching NASCAR for 18 years and while the commercials are up and can get annoying from time to time, I feel like it has more to do with the spacing of the commercials during TNT/NBC races as opposed to the actual number. Five years ago, the average time of commercials per hour of primetime network TV (ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.) was 15 minutes (7.5 min per 1/2 hour). Yesterday’s race coverage was 4 minutes over that per hour (meaning 1 to 2 more commercial breaks per hour). I also think they did a better job at pacing the commercials this week as opposed to the trainwreck that was Richmond.

You saw all of your football game and baseball games because football and baseball have natural “timeouts” (in between innings, timeouts, half-time, etc…) NASCAR runs none stop from green to checkered. Only slowing down for yellow flags. i think the TV guys do a good job of showing commercials during the pit stops and not only during green flag racing.What else do you think they should do? The race bradcast has to be paid for somehow. What if they had a pay-per-view channel for NASCAR. Sounds good right. Not really, it would be very expensive just to watch the race (Dave Despain said something like this last night). My point is we got it pretty good, we still watch the race live and for almost free.
And for whoever said it was hard to follow a race on TV, it is alot easier than trying to follow one when you are at the track. If you disagree id love to hear why.

Right now with football and nascar both on Sundays, I try to catch both the Redskins and Nascar but there is always commericals on both channels at the same time.

Sep 25, 03:24 PMIn general commericals are just a way to fill up space. I would say that during a normal 30 minute show, you see 20 mins of the show and 10 mins worth of commericals. It just goes to show that the big companies can pay more to advertise, than we do for our tv, so they get more air time than our shows do.

What everyone must realize is that network TV now provides programming only to keep the viewer on hand to watch the commercials. The network provides a product, but not to the viewer. The viewer doesn’t pay anything to the network to watch television. The network provides commercial airtime to paying corporations to air their products and services, while we sit messmorized, waiting for the next funny or cool commerical. NASCAR is only a tool to provide a demographic for the network. So, we are never going to get away from those commercials interfering with the racing we love to watch on television.

Sep 26, 08:54 AMdo you have the capability to put your data into pie or any form of graph? it would be interesting to see the data side-by-side along the course of, say, just the chase tracks. what i mean is the amount of time may vary across the board with the differences in the track sizes and race lengths. i love nascar stats and would like to see them side-by-side with pre year 2000 before the larger television deals that they are into. it would also be of interest to see that with lengths of caution periods. they have gotten ridiculous also. none the less, thanks for the time and effort you invest on this, we, as fans, appreciate all of it!

I feel like NBC is constantly cutting to commercials and cutting into restarts. Can someone direct me to where I can find this info? I really hope ESPN is taking notes!!!!

Sep 28, 06:39 AMYou cannot compare the amount of commercials for football or baseball, because NASCAR has the additional advantage of SPONSORSHIP for every driver and car. Every time we see or hear about the “Home Depot Chevrolet” or the “Office Depot Ford” we are being advertised to. Last time I looked, the New York Yankees uniforms were pinstripes, that’s it. If Nascar wants to be like the NFL, paint all the cars the same color, one per manufacturer, and go out and race. I won’t hold my breath waiting.
